Directories are websites that have several sections included making the website like a phone book where people can search them to find website. There are different kinds of directories where some are general and others are more targeted like web design directory.
Submitting a website to a directory does a couple of things. One it builds up the size of the directory so the owners of the directory likes it when you submit to them and two it provides exposure for your website.

Submitting to directories is a powerful form of link building. Directories are also showing up at the top of a lot of search engine results pages making them seen and used by a lot of people. If you have your website listed in these directories it will increase the chance of someone finding you. When you have your website listed in these directories you also receive a backlink to your site building the popularity and increasing the way the search engines view your site.
The search engines are constantly changing their algorithms and have not put as much weight on directory links as they have in the past, but they do highly regard links in highly relevant directories. When submitting to directories you want to make sure you submit to those that are relevant to your industry and if it is a general directory list in the most relevant category. Not all directories are of high quality so you will want to only submit your website to directories that are not spammy.
When should I submit to Directories?
Submitting to directories can be an ongoing process as there are more directories showing up online every day. Most directories only allow the submission of the home page of a website so you do not want to have all of your links pointing back to the home page as this does not look natural to the search engines.
There are different software programs that are available to help in the submission process and can keep you on a schedule of submitting to directories. When submitting to directories do not submit all at once in a large batch and then stop submitting. It is best to submit over time on a continual basis as it looks more natural to the search engines and will not get your website penalized.
