A Day Of Sadness, A Day Of Service

If you read through history books you will see a personality trend among many Americans. We are resilient, brave, and strong. This day in history, 13 years ago, we lost many loved ones due to a terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. It’s a day that will be recorded in history books for years to come, and a day that many Americans will hold ceremonies for in remembrance of those who died. However, September 11th is becoming less about mourning and more about communities, charity, and hope.

The terrorists that caused our country so much pain that day hoped that September 11th would forever be a day defined by the loss and destruction they caused. Instead we as Americans are turning that tragic day into a day of goodness for those around us.

You don’t have to be a part of a formal organization or group to give back to your community on this day of remembrance. Here are a few ideas to help give back to your community today.

Visit Local Seniors

Every town or city, no matter how small, has a Senior Center. Take some time out of your day today to visit your local Senior Center and brighten someone’s day. You can just walk into the front office and tell them you’re there to visit for the day and they will gladly take your help. You can read, play cards, listen to stories, and dance with some of the residents there. Or sometimes all you need to do is listen to someone that hasn’t been visited in a while.

Feed The Homeless

If you visit the downtown area of your home town there is bound to be a homeless shelter. Sign up to volunteer for a lunch or dinner shift and help prepare and serve food at the homeless shelter.

Leave Flowers

Buy a bundle of flowers and go door to door delivering single flowers to people’s doorsteps. You can do this in your own neighborhood or one that you are fairly familiar with. You never know who might be in need of a tender mercy and a little love.

Offer Your Skills

If you are good at a unique or useful task offer your services to someone who might be in need. Some examples are taking out the trash, changing the car oil, mowing the lawn, or even just offering someone a hug.

We hope that this list can inspire you to do some good on this day in history.
