Being Aware

We spend a lot of time talking about the good parts of technology, and even more specifically, social media. Equally important; however, are the disadvantages and problems that come with social media. Being aware of the stereotypes and pitfalls can give you a greater edge on the competition.

There seems to be two main schools of thought when it comes to accepting social media and incorporating its use. You have your traditionalists who treat change much as medieval people did, branding it with titles such as, “witchcraft”, or “sure-to-bring-about-the-apocalypse”. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have those that are often the first to test new forms of technology, the newer the better. As soon as everyone else catches on they quickly leave to find another format worthy of their time.

As you might have guessed, the best plan for your business will probably lie somewhere in between. With that being said, here are a couple problems to remember:

  • Social media is new. It is ever changing. It proves to be an impossible platform to research and study. As soon as universities and other institutions receive grants social media has already taken on a new form.
  • Social media is unpredictable. The newest app might gain one million downloads by the end of the month, and then be completely unused the next.
  • Social media is stereotyped. It is considered hard to understand and for younger generations, and as a result many older generations tend to shy away from its use.
  • Social media is geared towards the fast-paced. If your audience is older then you can count on them taking a little longer to use social media. They tend to wait a little bit more before becoming involved in technology.
  • Social media can be a difficult medium to balance. It is often hard to maintain a professional business on a social platform that is designed specifically to be personal, less-formal, and individualized.
  • With that being said, you should make plans. In order to be successful in today’s business and consumer world you have to use technology. Who you pick to manage your social media can make all the difference. They have to be aware of the pitfalls of change, stereotype, professionalism, etc. in order to help your brand and product become accepted and widely used.
