Let’s be honest, when Google Fiber was announced in Provo most of us had to do a quick Internet search to find out what that even meant. (No, it’s not a dietary supplement provided by Google.) But even now, nearly six months after the announcement, most of us are still scratching our heads. Where is this promised Google Fiber? When do I get this amazingly fast Internet? What do I need to do to have it in my home/business? These questions, along with many others, are questions easy enough to answer…if you know where to look!

So here’s a quick summary of what Google Fiber means for you Provo citizens:

1. What it is: Google Fiber bought iProvo, a fiber network that already existed and that was previously owned by Provo City. Google is updating and finishing network construction to make this Fiber Internet accessible in every Provo home. You can read about it here.

2. What that means for you: Towards the end of 2013, every Provo home will be eligible for a basic free Internet service (standard Internet speeds). You will also have the option to update to a Gigabit Internet (really, really fast Internet) for $70/month. Additionally, there is a plan for Gigabit Internet + TV for $120/month. The startup fee is only $30 for any of these plans. (You can read more here.)

3. If you’re in charge of a non-profit organization: Google Fiber is selecting up to 25 non-profit organizations in Provo to qualify for free Gigabit Internet and become part of the Google Fiber Community Connections Program. This program qualifies you for 10 years of free Internet! Apply here!

4. How to find out more: You can enter your email here for updates. Simple enough!

So now that you get it, quit scratching your head and get back to watching your browser load.
