Many people know what search engines are and the #1 search engine in the world called Google. However there are many people that I have talked to that really do not understand how a search engine works. I found a video that has Matt Cutts, head of Google’s web spam team, showing in a simplistic way of how Google works.
There are 3 main parts to a search engine:
- Crawler
- Index
- Serving Results
Most people only know about the serving results as they are able to search for things and then see the search engine results page where they can see the listings. Hopefully this will give you some more insight into what is really happening in the backend of a search engine.
