When it comes to Christmas traditions, it seems like every family has their own special recipe to make the holiday special. Some families have ornate Christmas traditions with specific times and places; other families have more subtle traditions that they may not even recognize as special or unique. But when it comes to the Christmas holiday, I believe that every family has their own way of celebrating this special time of year. Of all the Christmas traditions that my family has had, these are my favorites:

1. Leaving treats out for Santa and his reindeer. When I was a kid this was one of my favorite Christmas activities. Before bed on Christmas Eve we would leave homemade sugar cookies and milk for Santa, and then carrots and celery for the reindeer. In the morning we would look to see what they had eaten!

2. Christmas Eve sleepover. Every Christmas Eve my siblings and I would always have a big sleepover. This normally included watching our favorite Christmas movie (Home Alone) in a big pile of blankets laid out in front of the TV. In the morning we’d wake each other up and get ready for Christmas morning.

3. Opening presents early. As part of that sleepover tradition, we’d always wake up early! Sometimes we could hardly sleep. When we were really young this meant 4 or 5 am. Opening Christmas presents with only the Christmas tree lights as it was dark outside was part of the magic of Christmas time.

4. Christmas morning cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon rolls have been a Christmas breakfast tradition for my family for as long as I can remember. While we are opening presents the cinnamon rolls rise and bake, and then we eat them as soon as we’re done opening presents. The gooey, cinnamon insides with the creamy frosting on top makes my Christmas holiday complete!

These are the traditions that make Christmas the special holiday that I look forward to for eleven months out of the year. What Christmas traditions do you look forward to?
