Knowing Who Your Audience Is and What They Care About
Successful companies know how important marketing is to businesses. The purpose of marketing is to identify and reach the specific people who are the most likely to become customers (a.k.a. your “target market” or “target audience”). Huge sums of money are spent every day in an effort to better understand what people want and how to convince them that you have what they’re looking for. Here are some tips to help you get a head start reaching your target audience:
Put yourself in their shoes: Take a moment to imagine that you are on the outside looking in. When trying to reach an audience, you can NOT think like a businessman. You have to think like the customer! This is probably the single most important aspect of marketing strategy.
Ask around: Doing informal research can be every bit as useful as formal studies, if not more so. Talk to people around you about what they look for in a specific product or service, and what kind of message might reach them.
Take notes from the big guys: Obviously you can’t steal ideas from other companies’ marketing campaigns, but don’t be afraid to examine and dissect the efforts that have succeeded. Figure out why they worked. i.e. What is it about the “Share a Coke” campaign that worked so well? Did it make you feel like Coke brings happiness? Did it make you want to buy not 1 Coke but 2?
In summary, figure out what type of person is looking for your product or service, and then identify what sets them apart, what will catch their attention, and how you want to make them feel
