Musicians over the last few years have used traditional media to promote their music and brand towards their fans. With the evolution of social media, musicians have come to using social media to create a relationship with the artist for the fans and ownership for the musicians themselves.

Most people use social media to stay in contact with their favorite music artists’ latest fashion, music, tour dates and even to find new artists in the music world. It has become more reliable for fans than big name labels because the musicians run their own social media sites out of interest and not a chore.

These days, social media has erupted and is used more by the musicians themselves, sometimes managing their own social media accounts. From MixCloud, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, MySpace and 8tracks and many other music sharing sites, music artists use these platforms to their advantage to share and upload tracks with fans online.

MySpace

MySpace has made a comeback in the social media world, the design and feel of its web aesthetic is more music friendly, thanks to Justin Timberlake’s help with the site. The homepage features a variety of entertainment news and the user page is designed much like Pinterest, MySpace’s overall goal is dedicated to its visual look and to get the audience to listen to its artists’ music.

Tweet For A Track

Tweet For A Track is for musicians to upload a song to their official website for free and post a message to their Twitter and Facebook account. All the fan has to do to download the song for free is repost or retweet the original post; creating a ripple effect that’s helpful to the musician’s self-promotion through the fans’ number of shares on their account.

YouTube

An example of how a musician became an instant celebrity through social media is Justin Bieber. Bieber, who started to use YouTube to broadcast himself and his musical talents on the Internet, was discovered by Usher Raymond and eventually signed a deal with Island Records.

“Social media helped launch my career,” said Bieber, when interviewed by Forbes. “Without the Internet and YouTube, I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to put my music out there and have people hear it.”
